Luke Rockhold showed off the gruesome injuries he sustained in his bare-knuckle boxing debut.
The former UFC star, who at one time held the middleweight belt, was forced to quit against Mike Perry in his first appearance at Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship [BKFC].
Rockhold had a nasty lip injury and also managed to chip his teeth during the contest.
Following the event, he posted a video on Instagram and said: “Well f***, what can I say. You can check Bare Knuckle off the list. Some crazy shit. Those little knuckles got me (shows off broken tooth). Maybe a beard. Maybe a better mouthpiece.
"It’s a good fight, shame it had to end that way. Motherf***** Mike you tough b******. Congrats. Thanks to my sponsors, thanks to the people. I’m not done. Some gloves would be nice though."
Rockhold got off to a good start in front of a packed crowd, that included UFC superstar Conor McGregor, as he wobbled his opponent with a big punch in round one.
However, in the second frame he backed up to the ropes before pointing to his gumshield and appearing to give up as referee Dan Miragliotta waved off the BKFC 41 main event.
“Luke Rockhold, some of his teeth got cracked,” BKFC president Dave Feldman explained during his post-fight press conference.
“So that’s why he wasn’t able to continue. His teeth got messed up pretty good. What a great start to that fight. Great fight.”
Since then, a graphic photo has been circulating online and it shows someone examining Rockhold’s mangled teeth in the immediate aftermath of the stoppage.
The 38-year-old is yet to comment on his latest career setback.
Rockhold has struggled for form since losing his 185lb title to Michael Bisping who knocked him out cold when they rematched at UFC 199 in 2016.
Back-to-back stoppage defeats against Jan Blachowicz and Yoel Romero triggered a three-year hiatus from fighting before he returned in a unanimous decision defeat against Paulo Costa last August.
Rockhold retired from MMA and after his release from the UFC, he planned to finish off his career by taking lucrative and fun fights in other sports – but following this latest defeat, it’s unclear if he’ll want to continue competing.
Meanwhile, Perry is in terrific form since leaving the UFC following a run of just one win from five fights after being touted as a potential title contender during his rise through MMA’s premier promotion.
‘Platinum’ has won three fights under the BKFC banner, beating MMA veteran Julian Lane and Bellator KO artist Michael ‘Venom’ Page before taking on Rockhold.
It appears the sky is the limit for the 31-year-old fight star who has previously been linked to a scrap with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.
